The context: 2026, the year of agents

If 2023 was the year of chatbots and 2024-2025 the years of copilots, 2026 is the year AI works on its own. Agents — systems that plan, use tools and complete tasks end to end — have gone from demo to product. Claude Code can resolve a full ticket from start to finish; Cowork manages files and projects in the cloud; and MCP connectors give AI secure access to real work tools.

In parallel, the safety conversation has become central: shared jailbreak-evaluation frameworks between competing labs, specific safeguards for cybersecurity capabilities, and collaborations with governments — such as the Government of Alberta using Claude to detect and resolve vulnerabilities in public systems.

Want to go deeper? Explore our guides on skills, MCP connectors and the best GitHub repositories to squeeze the most out of this new paradigm.
