โ˜๏ธ Complete 2026 guide

Claude Cowork: the AI that works for you

Anthropic's agent for everyday work: it organizes files, creates documents, researches and automates tasks โ€” and since 2026, it keeps working in the cloud even when you turn off your computer.

What is Claude Cowork?

Claude Cowork is Anthropic's agent for non-technical work: if Claude Code is the programming teammate, Cowork is the office teammate. Give it access to a folder or describe a task in natural language, and it executes end to end: organizing files, creating Word documents and Excel sheets, preparing presentations, researching the web, filling in reports and automating the repetitive stuff.

The key difference from a normal chat: it doesn't give you instructions, it does the work. It doesn't explain how to sort your invoices โ€” it sorts them. And since the 2026 move to the cloud, sessions keep running even when you close your laptop: assign something from your phone in the morning and collect the result in the afternoon. It also supports scheduled tasks (weekly reports, daily digests) and extends with the same skills and MCP connectors as the rest of the Claude ecosystem.

Tames the chaos

"Organize my downloads folder by type and date" โ€” and 400 files find their place on their own.

๐Ÿ“Š

Creates deliverables

Word reports, Excel sheets with formulas and full presentations from your data and notes.

๐Ÿ”

Automates routines

Scheduled tasks: every Monday's report or every morning's news digest, without asking twice.

How to use it, step by step

Open Cowork and give it context

From Claude's desktop app, enter Cowork and add the folder you want it to work with (you control what it can access). You review any important changes before they're final.

Delegate like to a new teammate

Describe the task with a concrete outcome: not "help me with invoices" but "review these 30 invoices, extract date, vendor and amount into an Excel, and flag the ones over โ‚ฌ500". Our simulator below trains you on this.

Let it work (and walk away if you want)

Cowork plans, executes and shows its progress with a task list. In the cloud, you can close the laptop and review the result later from any device.

Review, adjust and schedule

Check the deliverable, request changes ("the table with monthly totals"), and if it's a recurring task, schedule it to repeat weekly on its own.

3 real-world examples

  • Freelancer with invoices under control: "Every Friday, review the Invoices folder, extract the data into my accounting Excel and flag which ones are due next week". One scheduled task, zero lost Fridays.
  • Exam student: uploads 12 PDFs of course material and asks "make me a summary per topic, an 8-week study calendar and a 20-question test per block". Cowork delivers all three documents.
  • Team lead: "With this week's meeting notes, prepare the status report for management using the usual template and drop it in the Reports folder". Pure delegation.

Cowork vs. Claude Code: which one do you need?

Simple rule: if the outcome is code (an app, a script, a website), Claude Code. If the outcome is office work (documents, files, analysis, management), Cowork. Both? Not unusual: design with Claude Design, build with Code and manage the project with Cowork.

Frequently asked questions

Is Claude Cowork free?
Cowork is included in Claude's paid plans. If you're not paying yet, check our guide to Claude's free plan and make the jump once you use it daily โ€” for real work it pays for itself fast.
Is it safe to give it access to my files?
You choose exactly which folders it can see, important changes go through your confirmation, and you can review everything it did in the session log. Start with a test folder until you build trust.
How is Cowork different from the normal Claude chat?
The chat converses; Cowork executes. In chat, Claude tells you how to do something; in Cowork, it does it: it touches real files, creates real documents and completes the task end to end, showing you the progress.
